Being Accountable for You

You have probably heard the phrase “hold yourself accountable” and wondered what exactly it meant. You may be thinking that you already do that, and it is a given in your everyday routine, but you may not be fully grasping the meaning. It is important to always “own” what you do, embrace it, defend it, and always stand by your actions and decisions. This comes easier for others, as many people have a difficult time admitting mistakes, especially in the workplace. Why is it so important to understand accountability?

When a mistake is made, it can be very easy to blame others. Finger pointing happens in the workplace now more than ever before. We can now blame technology for simple human error. Regardless of the words you say or the actions you take it is important to always accept responsibility. This requires you to make decisions that are well-thought out and that you can hold true to.

  • Accountability equals honesty. It is crucial that you are honest with yourself, your co-workers, and everyone you encounter. If you prove that you are accountable for your actions, then chances are you will develop a reputation as an honest individual with a great deal of integrity.
  • Don’t allow others to pull you down. There are going to be plenty of negative people you encounter who are not able to hold themselves accountable for their mistakes. Stay true to what you believe and try not to sway far from those beliefs.
  • When you are fully accountable for your actions, you become a team player and a positive person to work with.

Being accountable simply requires you to be honest and full of integrity. Believe in yourself and it will start to come easy.
